Epic West Virginia

Dolly Sods Wilderness, West Virginia

There’s a reason they call it “Almost Heaven West Virginia.” Dolly Sods showcases this in the form of mountains with an interesting ecology of stunted pines, wind carved rocks and high altitude meadows. It’s the highest plateau east of the Mississippi and arguably the best sunrise spot too.

I spent last weekend here with awesome photographers Gabe Leidy and Phil Sisto. We drove over potholed roads to reach the sods, car camped and woke up surrounded by a bed of ferns in our tents and hammocks. We feasted on canned chili and sipped on bourbon. We were ecstatic with our images but I’d venture to say the company was even better.
Scenes like this just remind me why fall is my favorite season of the year and I can’t wait until the colors change up here. Where is everyone hiking and photographing this autumn?
