Left in awe from last night’s insane Northern Lights display that reached all the way down to us in Cleveland, Ohio!

I’d venture to say this was one of the strongest aurora showings in Ohio history!

Here are some extra shots of the incredible Northern Lights show arrived in Cleveland Sunday night/Monday morning.

I wanted to thank everyone for all of the supportive comments and print inquiries. The print links are now live in the comments section below! 🙂

I wanted to answer some questions you guys had:

I photographed the Aurora Borealis from 8 pm-3:30 am but the show continued until sunrise that morning. As long as you had clear skies, you were able to see the Aurora Borealis, although it’s much fainter to the naked eye.

What caused this massive G2 class storm was a chain reaction that sent a solar flare and a CME (coronal mass ejection) that struck Earth’s magnetic field, prompting this storm.

When I received an email alert from Space Weather (highly recommend signing up for their email list), I kept an eye on conditions and also checked the FB group, Great Lakes Aurora Hunters. They are a group of passionate aurora chasers (many based out of Michigan) who offer great viewing advice and real time storm updates.

The best aurora monitoring apps I use are: Space Weather Live, AuroraNow, and AuroraAlerts.

It will take some practice to learn the terms KP, Hemispheric Power, Bz, Bt. and Solar Wind speed but these are the crucial elements in determining if an aurora will show. I’ve tried probably 40 times and have only gotten them twice so it’s still an incredibly rare event, especially for Cleveland. If you travel to the U.P, Alaska, Norway or Iceland, you will have much better viewing odds the further North you are!
